    This course takes an in-depth look at the WSU Accruals and Allocation Adjustment Policy and examines how allocation adjustments interact with reserve accounts.

  • Award Administration: Part 3 - Audits and Audit Issues recorded on 3/9/2012
    A presentation by a representative of the Internal Audit Office is included in this section, highlighting high risk areas and tips on how to protect the department.
  • Award Administration: Part 4 - Balances, FACTS and Data Warehouse recorded on 4/1/2011
    The ultimate objective of this final section of the series is to demonstrate how to use BALANCES, FACTS, and the Data Warehouse to minimize the need for a separate ancillary system.
  • Basic Talisma Training  recorded on 6/17/2009
    Talisma is a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool designed to identify, attract, engage, and communicate with prospective and current students. This courses helps academic coordinators set up their Talisma work space and learn the basic terminology and work functions of Talisma.
  • Beyond the H-1B: Sponsoring Employees with Permanent Residency recorded on 11/17/2010
    This course describes WSU's permanent residency sponsorship guidelines with detailed information about the special handling labor certification process, standard labor certification process and outstanding professor/researcher petitions.
  • Budgeting for Sponsored Projects recorded on 10/15/2010
    The first session of this two-part class defines sponsored projects and explain how they differ from other activities.  Emphasis is be placed upon OMB Circulars A21 and A110, and direct costs vs. facilities and administrative costs.  The second portion focuses on building and reviewing budgets, estimating costs, cost categories, and types of budgets.
  • Business Policies, Procedures, and Records Retention recorded on 1/5/2007
    This workshop discusses how to use the Business Policies and Procedures Manual, how the manual is updated and its history. Records scheduling, records retention and state records requirements are also examined.
  • Computer and Network Security Awareness recorded on 6/8/2007
    This course highlights best computer security practices - and most common mistakes - to help you protect yourself from hoaxes, spyware, phishing, ID theft, copyright issues, spam, viruses, social engineering. Appropriate WSU policies are also identified.
  • Conflict Resolution and Negotiation recorded on 10/5/2011
    This course examines the following areas: sources of conflict within the workplace; strategies for dealing with conflict; personal conflict management styles; basic negotiation strategies; basic negotiation scenario constructions.
  • Course Scheduling through Rooms recorded on 10/11/2011
    This training features a detailed demonstration of how to schedule class sections for upcoming semesters using the Registrar’s Office Online Managements of Scheduling (ROOMS) system.  WSU departments must submit their class schedule for the upcoming semesters to the Registrar’s Office using the ROOMS system.
  • Dealing with Faculty Personnel Issues recorded on 11/2/2011
    This short course examines the WSU faculty disciplinary policy and the issue of research misconduct. Available resources on campus are identified with an emphasis placed upon communication with the Dean.
  • Dealing with Staff Personnel Issues recorded on 12/1/2011
    Staff personnel issues such as performance evaluation, discipline, Bargaining Units and rules are discussed in this session.
  • Dealing with Student Issues recorded on 1/25/2012
    This workshop focuses on such student issues at WSU as: distance education; the student handbook; student disciplinary policies; handling student complaints; graduate recruiting goals; program assessment; navigating program modifications; and directing issues to the appropriate office.
  • Effort Certification and Cost Sharing recorded on 12/9/2011
    This workshop describes cost sharing, when it must be documented and reported, and why the federal government requires it. The effort certification form will be discussed in detail and tips for processing these forms at the departmental level will be provided.
  • Employing H-1B Workers and Immigrant Tracker Training recorded on 11/3/2010
    H-1B requirements and process, from case initiation to bringing the H-1B employee on board, are explained in this workshop.  Additionally, WSU’s on-line immigration case management system is described.
  • EndNote: Beginners Class recorded on 10/2/2009
    This workshop covers understanding the EndNote X2 interface, setting preferences, simple and complex sorting, editing references, creating a library, manually entering data, selecting output styles, and exporting references from “Academic Search Complete.”
  • EndNote: Cite While You Write  recorded on 10/30/2009
    This session demonstrates how to use EndNote and Microsoft Word to create independent bibliographies, format documents with in-text citations and a bibliography, and how to troubleshoot when you encounter problems using “Cite While You Write.”
  • F&A Space Survey  recorded on 4/17/2009
    This training is to assist with the space survey with room type and function distinctions.  The distinctions amongst the various Functions are discussed, and how to approach a percentage of time analysis of the use of a room.
  • F-1 OPT Status and Beyond...Temporary and Permanent Immigration Options after Graduation     recorded on 11/9/2010    
    This course discusses how students can remain in lawful work staus after graduation. Topics include OPT status, O-1, E-3 options, as well as dos and don'ts of employer sponsorship.
  • Faculty Performance Reviews  Recorded on 10/20/2011
    Specific topics addressed in this session include pre-tenure reviews, the tenure and promotion process (procedures, timelines, standards) and the Chair's role.
  • Faculty Recruitment, Mentoring and Retention recorded on 9/24/2008
    This workshop addresses faculty recruitment, mentoring and retention at Washington State University. Among the specific topics addressed are the recruitment process, the partner accommodation policy, professional leave and the retirement policy.
  • FERPA Roundtable Discussion recorded on 9/10/2009
    The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act is a Federal law that seeks to protect the rights of students and to insure the privacy of their education records. This law applies to Washington State University and online training is available through the Office of the Registrar. This roundtable discussion goes beyond the online training and encourages participants to ask the questions and explore the finer points of the law.
  • Fuel Card Custodians’ Orientation recorded on 10/25/2011
    Comdata fuel cards are used for retail fuel.  Before Comdata fuel cards can be issued to departments, Fuel Card Custodians must attend an orientation session.  In these sessions the Program Administrator introduces the program, goes over terms of the Card Custodian Agreement, explains the card PIN system and demonstrates the on-line reports and other tools available at the Comdata website.
  • Hosting and Employing J-1 Exchange Visitors: Scholars, Students, and student Interns  recorded on 10/15/2010
    This session covers the unique opportunities and challenges of this new category and discuss the processes that have been put in place by OISS to assist and guide the hosting departments.  Topics will include working with OISS, the difference between J-1 and H-1B, process time lines, other WSU offices providing assistance, contracts and termination

  • Leadership and Communication recorded on 9/14/2011
    This session in the Department Chairs and Directors Training Workshop series provides a framework through which participants can assess personal leadership styles, learn how differences in leadership styles affect group process and morale, and learn about different communication styles, rapport building, active listening, group and written communication.  Also discussed in how to use WSU’s Strategic Plan as a backdrop and convey messages that are clear and compelling.

    Recent research suggests that faculty members may have trouble making the leap to full professor.  This workshop features discussion and answers to questions about university procedures and expectations for promotion to full professor in this workshop.

  • Personnel Position Payroll Electronic Routing Management System (PERMS) Training recorded 3/17/2009
    PERMS is the electronic version of the Personnel Action Form (PAF) and is used to authorize personnel transactions and communicate employment status to Human Resource Services, Payroll Services, and other central offices for faculty, administrative professional employees, civil service employees, graduate assistants, and employees covered by collective bargaining unit agreements.
  • Position Control Part 1 and Position Control Part 2  recorded in 2011
    This course is designed for those who want to gain a basic understanding of position control.  The first section provides an overview of how HEPPS is designed, where to find necessary position information in HEPPS, how forms areroutedandan overview of position control definitions and functions.  The second section extends your knowledge of position control through more in-depth discussion and application of position control policies and procedures, including more challenging Position Action forms and more hands-on exercises.

  • Safe Driving Habits: A State of Mind      
    This loss prevention video for state employees who drive State Motor Pool, agency owned or privately owned vehicles on state business promotes safe driving to reduce vehicle incidents, crashes, and claims. This is an excellent orientation training tool for new state employees with driving duties to set the tone about the importance of driving safety.
  • State Ethics Law and Whistleblower Act for Supervisors recorded on 1/4/2007
    Beginning with an overview ofthe State Ethics Law and the Whistle-blower Act, this class features issues and discussion of particular interest to supervisors and managers.  The Ethics in Public Service requirements found in RCW 42.52 and WAC 292 are examined, as well as the use of state resources, conflicts of interest, receipt of gifts and confidential information.
  • Summer Session PERMS Training/Refresher  recorded on 3/26/2010    
    There are additional steps for entering Summer Session PERMS appointments. This training includes how to enter Summer Session appointments in PERMS and a review of Summer Session salary calculation policies.
  • Supervisor as Motivator recorded on 2/9/2007
    This class provides an overview of the determinants of behavior and the different theories of motivation, including a discussion on the importance of recognizing and rewarding employees.
  • Supervisor as Safety Manager  recorded on 3/14/2007
    This supervisory training course focuses on the new employee safety checklist, the Supervisors' Safety Manual, WSU's Accident Prevention Program and the supervisor's roles in performing inspections and reporting and investigating accidents.

    This workshop answers questions about all aspects of faculty performance reviews and is designed for any faculty member who has an interest in the issues of tenure and promotion, particularly those who are just beginning their careers at WSU or who will come up for an important evaluation soon.

    This course provides information on leave accruals, accurate time reporting, how to document overtime and much, much more.  Participants have the opportunity to practice the steps that help accurately maintain time reports and understand how critical accurate time reporting is.

    This workshop features strategies for effective oral communications between native speakers of English and non-native speakers of English in a variety of settings.

    This course provides an overview of WSU as a Research University. It describes the role of the Office of Research as well as the relationship of WSU and the Washington State University Foundation. Also included is an overview of the programs and priorities regarding research and scholarship stimulation, as well as program implementation.

  • Tips on Improving Teaching and Advising recorded on 12/4/2008
    This informal and interactive session includes discussion of the Guide for Elevating Performance. The Guide provides a tool to assess and improve performance. Also included is information on advising and a look at some of the tools for students and faculty that became beginning Spring 2008 semester.

  • Understanding Diversity, Ethics and Workplace Harassment  recorded on 2/10/2011    
    A review of the offices and services provided by Washington State University's Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity to departments is addressed in this course. WSU's Workplace Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy is also reviewed, as well as the State Ethics Law with an emphasis upon the appropriate use of resources and conflicts of interest.

  • Voluntary Early Retirement Incentive (VERI) Seminar  recorded on 4/5/2010
    This seminar explains the VERI program for participants of the Washington State University Retirement Plan (also commonly referred to as the TIAA-CREF plan). Employees are encouraged to attend a seminar prior to requesting a individual meeting with HRS personnel.

    The Office of Financial Management (OFM) and the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) approved the Voluntary Retirement Incentive Program (VRIP) for participants in the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). This session describes the program.
  • WA State Destination-Based Sales Tax Changes recorded on 4/22/2008
    Effective July 1, 2008, the State of Washington will change how sales tax will be calculated.  These changes affect both sellers and buyers.  This course describes the sweeping changes.
