Effective July 1, 2025: Washington State Expands Bereavement Leave Benefits

Effective July 1, 2025, Washington State will implement expanded bereavement leave provisions for eligible employees, reflecting a more inclusive and supportive approach to time off following the loss of a loved one.

Key Changes Include:

  • Increased Paid Leave: Eligible employees will now receive up to five days of paid bereavement leave, up from the previous three-day standard.
  • Broader Definition of “Family Member”: The updated rules expand the definition of family to include a wider range of relationships, allowing more employees to qualify for leave.
  • Additional Leave Options: Employees may also request to use other accrued leave types—such as vacation, sick leave, or personal holidays—or take unpaid leave, subject to employer approval.

Important Note for Bargaining Unit Employees: Bereavement leave for employees covered by a union contract is governed by the specific terms outlined in their applicable Contract.
