Administrative Professional Compensation Structure

Administrative professional (AP) positions are placed into grades in the pay structure based on position complexity: knowledge requirements, problem solving, accountability, and organizational impact. Compensation is set for new hires and out-of-cycle increases utilizing the tools and information below and UPPM 60.02 and UPPM 60.12.

Salary Determination Guide

The salary determination guide below provides compensation direction for new AP employee salaries. Placement within a quartile is based on the candidate’s current skills and abilities related to the position. Adjustments to existing employee’s salaries are assessed based upon midpoint of the range. Refer to UPPM 60.12 for additional information.

  • Expert (or has demonstrated capability to perform as expert based on prior experience) in all job criteria.
  • Has broad and deep knowledge of own area as well as related areas.
  • Depth and breadth of experience, specialized skills, perspectives add significant value to institution.
  • Serves as expert resource and/or role model/mentor to others in similar jobs or to other areas.
  • Placement in this quartile requires review and prior approval by HRS.

Salary Ranges

AP position titles up to the Executive Director level are assigned a salary range based upon point factoring and a geographic zone based on work location (Assistant Vice President and above are not included). Salaries for new AP employees are placed into quartiles utilizing the Salary Determination Guide and UPPM 60.12.

Administrative Professional positions are assigned grades based upon required knowledge, types of problem-solving, accountability within the role, and overall impact.

Compensable Factors

Knowledge

  • Special knowledge required for essential responsibilities.
  • How knowledge is gained.
  • Degree of integration with others to complete the work.

Problem Solving

  • Types of problems and/ or challenges the position encounters.
  • Frequency/complexity, and ease of identifying a solution.
  • Tools, resources, and precedents that guide decision making.

Independence

  • Frequency of monitoring and supervision of work.
  • Availability of help and resources.
  • Ability to rearrange work and reprioritize duties.

Impact

  • How influential the position is within the institution – area(s) impacted.
  • Importance of impact on the end results for the institution.
