Do I need to report my leave if I am unable to get to my worksite due to inclement weather?

Yes, please refer to your appropriate employment type below:

Civil Service

Civil Service employees may use the following types of leave:

  • Accrued compensatory time
  • Personal holiday (full day only)
  • Accrued annual leave
  • Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
  • Leave without pay

Alternatives to leave for Civil Service employees:

  • If business operation allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, overtime eligible employees may temporarily adjust their schedule to work additional hours during the workweek which the inclement weather occurs.
  • If business operations allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, employees may work from home.

Bargaining Unit Covered

Employees should refer to appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Administrative Professional

AP employees may use the following types of leave:

  • Accrued compensatory time
  • Accrued annual leave (annual leave may not be taken before it is earned)
  • Personal Holiday (full day only)
  • Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
  • Leave without pay

Alternatives to leave for Administrative Professionals:

  • If business operation allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, overtime eligible employees may temporarily adjust their schedule to work additional hours during the workweek which the inclement weather occurs.
  • If business operations allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, employees may work from home.

Faculty

Faculty may use the following types of leave:

  • Accrued annual leave
  • Personal Holiday – for eligible Faculty (full day only)
  • Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
  • Leave without pay

Alternatives to leave for faculty:

  • Faculty members can work from home but should seek approval from the appropriate department chair or director.

I have exhausted all my leave and am unable to work from home. What options do I have?

Upon prior approval from the manager/supervisor, an overtime eligible Administrative Professional or Civil Service employee may:

  • Use leave without pay
  • If business needs allow temporarily adjust his/her schedule, to work additional hours during the workweek that the inclement weather occurred.

Bargaining Unit Covered employees should refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Upon prior approval from the manager/supervisor, an overtime exempt Administrative Professional, Civil Service employee, or Faculty member may:

  • Use leave without pay
  • If business needs allow temporarily adjust his/her schedule, to work additional hours.

What happens if I work overtime during inclement weather?

  • Overtime-eligible Civil Service employees receive compensation for overtime worked in accordance with WAC 357-28.
  • Overtime-eligible Administrative Professional employees receive compensation for overtime worked during the closure in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Bargaining Unit Covered employees should refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
