Training plays an important role in supporting employees in their work at WSU. To help make learning both accessible and consistent across the university, WSU has established policies that outline how training time, release time, and professional development are handled.
This page provides an overview of those policies and related guidance to help employees and supervisors understand expectations and plan training within the workday.
WSU Policies and Guidance
WSU Policy on Training and Development (UPPM 60.71)
UPPM 60.71 establishes the university’s policy on training and development, including the purpose of employee training, the roles of employees and supervisors, and how training supports both institutional goals and job-related skills.
Appropriate Use of Training Time
The appropriate use of training time guidance outlines how employee work time may be used for training activities and clarifies expectations for balancing learning with job responsibilities. It helps ensure training time is used appropriately, consistently, and in alignment with university needs.
WSU Training and Development Plan
WSU maintains a Training and Development Plan that provides high‑level context for how employee training and skill development are supported across the university. The plan reflects institutional priorities and serves as a reference point for training efforts at WSU.
Creating a Learning Plan vs. WSU’s Training and Development Plan
Throughout this website, there are references to both Creating a Learning Plan and WSU’s Training and Development Plan. While they are related, each serves a different purpose.
Creating a Learning Plan, featured in the Invest in You section, supports employees in reflecting on their goals, interests, and development priorities and planning learning that supports their individual growth.
WSU’s Training and Development Plan, by contrast, provides an institutional framework for how training and development are supported across the university. It outlines system‑level priorities, guiding principles, and the broader approach WSU takes to employee training.
Together, these resources support learning at WSU by balancing individual development with shared expectations and policies that guide training across the system.
If you have questions about how this framework relates to training opportunities or policies, please contact Learning & Organizational Development (LOD).
