1. How will I know if the university has suspended operations due to inclement weather or some other type of emergency?
Should the President or his designee suspend operations at all or part of the university’s worksites, information will be forthcoming through a variety of channels including:
- WSU Crisis Communication System: register your telephone, cell phone or email at MyWSU.
- WSU Alert website for your campus:

2. How will I know if I am required to report to work during a period of suspended operations?
The appointing authority for your area/college/unit or his/her designee determines what personnel are essential and must report to work. Each area/college/unit should have an emergency response plan identifying essential personnel. Talk to your manager/supervisor to determine if you should report to work during a period of suspended operations.

3. Do I need to report my leave if I am not required to report to work during a period of suspended operations?
Yes, please refer to your appropriate employment type:
Civil Service
Civil Service employees may use the following types of leave:
- Accrued compensatory time: may be required to use this first (overtime eligible CS employees)
- Personal holiday (full day only)
- Accrued annual leave
- Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
- Leave Without Pay
Alternatives to leave:
- If business operation allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, overtime eligible employees may temporarily adjust their schedule to work additional hours during the workweek which the inclement weather occurs.
- If business operations allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, employees may work from home.
Refer to Staffing During Suspended Operations or Emergency Closures (BPPM 60.40), Civil Service Employee Leave (BPPM 60.57), and WAC 357-31-265 (civil service employees and suspended operations).
Bargaining Unit Covered
Employees should refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Administrative Professional
Employees may use the following types of leave:
- Accrued compensatory time: may be required to use this first (overtime eligible AP employees only)
- Accrued annual leave (annual leave may not be taken before it is earned)
- Personal Holiday (full day only)
- Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
- Leave Without Pay
Alternatives to leave:
- If business operation allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, overtime eligible employees may temporarily adjust their schedule to work additional hours during the workweek which the inclement weather occurs.
- If business operations allow, and an employee receives prior supervisor approval, employees may work from home.

Faculty
Employees may use the following types of leave:
- Accrued annual leave
- Personal Holiday – for eligible Faculty (full day only)
- Sick leave (after all other leaves are exhausted, up to 3 days maximum in a calendar year)
- Leave without pay
Alternatives to leave:
- Faculty members can work from home but should seek approval from the appropriate department chair or director.
Refer to Faculty and Administrative Professional Personnel Leave (BPPM 60.56) and Staffing During Suspended Operations or Emergency Closures (BPPM 60.40).
4. I have exhausted all my leave and am unable to work from home during a period of suspended operations. What options do I have?
Upon prior approval from the manager/supervisor, an overtime eligible Administrative Professional or Civil Service employee may:
- Use leave without pay
- Request to temporarily adjust his/her schedule, to work additional hours during the workweek that the suspended operations occurred
Bargaining Unit employees should refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement on the Labor Relations website.
Upon prior approval from the manager/supervisor, an overtime exempt Administrative Professional, Civil Service employee, or Faculty member may:
- Use leave without pay
- If business needs allow temporarily adjust his/her schedule, to work additional hours
5. I was required to work during a period of suspended operations. How will I be compensated?
You will be compensated at your regular rate of pay.

6. What happens if I work overtime during a period of suspended operations?
Overtime-eligible Civil Service employees receive compensation for overtime worked in accordance with WAC 357-28 (Compensation).
Overtime-eligible Administrative Professional employees receive compensation for overtime worked during the closure in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Bargaining Unit employees should refer to the appropriate Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement.
