Karla grew up on a farm just outside of Fairfield, WA. She graduated from Liberty High school and attended Eastern Washington University where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Radio-Television Production degree. She started working as a TV/Video Operator I for the Intercollegiate College of Nursing in October of 1995. This was only a nine-month position and to supplement this schedule she worked several summers supporting Nursing professional development along with videoconference classes at the WSU Spokane campus. Karla’s role changed to a 12-month position when she was promoted to Media Tech Supervisor in 2007. She helped with the transition of the College of Nursing to the WSU Spokane campus.
In 2010 classroom support merged with Information Technology services and Karla was promoted to Multimedia Services Coordinator. In this new role Karla supervised all classroom support staff for the Spokane campus, helped create the campus room directory webpages and specifically focused on education technology. In 2018, another opportunity for Karla presented itself to work in the Student affairs office. Karla now works as the academic scheduling coordinator and continues to work with education technology focusing on accessible technology.
She is currently the Spokane council representative for APAC (Administrative Professional Advisory Council). Karla is also a member of and serves on the conference committee for WAPED (Washington Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability). Outside of work she the mother of 3 boys (22, 18 and 10), is actively involved in supporting her kids in school and volunteers for Camp TWIGS – a weekend day camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes. She enjoys swimming, biking, walking and appreciates being able to work and live here in the Inland Northwest near all her family.
