Employer Provided Life Coverage
WSU provides Basic Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance for benefit eligible employees. The basic policy is $35,000 worth of coverage. The AD&D basic policy is $5,000 worth of coverage. WSU provides this coverage at no cost to you.
It is highly recommended you name your beneficiary for this coverage, even if you do not purchase additional insurance.
Additional Coverage Options
Employees may design their own plan by purchasing additional Term Life Insurance coverage for themselves, a spouse, and each eligible dependent child. Some amounts require the employee to provide medical evidence of insurability.

When can you enroll?
You may enroll without Medical Evidence of Insurability within the first 31 days of being eligible for Employer paid benefits for the following coverage:
- Optional Life Insurance for Employees up to $500,000
- Optional Life Insurance for Spouse/State-Registered Domestic Partner up to $100,000
- Optional Life Insurance for Children up to $10,000
This option is applicable for newly eligible employees (31 days) and newly eligible dependents due to marriage, birth, etc. (60 days)
If you enroll outside the 31/60 day enrollment window, you will have to provide Medical Evidence of Insurability for any amount requested. Medical Evidence of Insurability is also required to purchase the following coverage:
- Optional Life Insurance for Employees above $500,000 up to $1,000,000
- Optional Life Insurance for Spouse/State-Registered Domestic Partner above $100,000 (up to 50% of Employee optional life)
- Optional Life Insurance for Child(ren) above $10,000
How to Enroll or Make Changes
You can complete the MetLife Enrollment/Change form or create an account on MetLife’s MyBenefits Portal using “WA State Health Care Authority PEBB” as the account sign in. You can make changes at any time and do not have to wait from the annual open enrollment period.
